What’s the Difference Between Simple and Complex Carbohydrates?

“Eating carbs will make you fat!”

“Cut carbs from your diet and you’ll lose weight easily”.

Like fats, carbohydrates have been made out to be the ‘baddies’ when it comes to weight loss.

However – Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for your body and most importantly your brain, nervous system and red blood cells must have a continuous supply of them in order to keep functioning.

Carbohydrates can be broken down into two groups:

1.  Complex carbohydrate foods are basically those in wholegrain form such as wholegrain breads, oats, muesli and brown rice. Complex carbs are broken down into glucose more slowly than simple carbohydrates so provide a gradual and steady stream of energy throughout the day.

2.  Simple carbohydrates in their natural form (found in fruit) are also needed as they aid digestion and are full of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. Simple carbs can also be found in cakes, biscuits, breads & pasta made from white flour, soft drinks, fruit juice and sweets. These sorts of  Simple carbs are highly refined and tend to be digested very quickly, leaving you
feeling hungry again.

For a balanced and healthy diet we need both Simple & Complex carbohydrates, (however you should avoid the refined simple carbs as much as possible).
