I’m sure we have all heard the old adage “We are what we eat”.

These few simple words are so true!

Eating the right healthy foods at the right time is important for our health and well-being. Along with exercise and stress management, healthy eating can have a huge impact on how you feel and how much energy you have throughout the day.

Many of us live busy lives and what we eat tends to suffer for it. In a rush to get to work in the mornings we may gulp down a coffee and take a piece of toast out the door with us or even worse skip breakfast altogether. To give ourselves energy to get through the day we then rely on high calorie snacks, junk food or highly processed food.  The majority of these contain trans fats (bad fats) which cause weight gain and has been linked to some mental disorders.

Our blood sugars rise with the intake of these foods, however as they are  digested and absorbed very quickly by our body, our energy levels soon drop and then our focus and concentration begins to wane.  We then go in search of a quick fix to get the energy levels up which is usually in the form of a chocolate bar, sweets or biscuits.

The impact of this unhealthy eating will take a toll on your overall health and well-being. With low energy levels we constantly feel tired and irritable and in an unhealthy state of mind.

When we eat a healthy well-balanced diet of three meals and two snacks each day, we are providing our body with all the essential nutrients it needs to function properly (without overloading the calories). When our body is functioning as it should we have vitality and energy, we are alert and focused which all contribute to a healthy state of mind.

In addition, simply knowing you are taking care of yourself can boost your mood!
